All WSU students and employees have access to Microsoft OneNote, a digital note-taking and note management tool. OneNote is much more than a bottomless supply of spiral notebooks. Saving your OneNote notebooks out to your Microsoft OneDrive allows you to sync your OneNote information across all of your mobile devices so you can access your notes at any time.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I save my OneNote notebooks?
OneNote is designed to be used with OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage service. Storing your OneNote notebooks in your Winona State OneDrive allows you to access them from any device (e.g., your WSU laptop, personally-owed devices). You can also store your OneNote notebooks locally (e.g., on your WSU laptop's harddrive) and to a Microsoft Teams site for all your team members to share.

How many OneNote notebooks can I have?
You can create as many OneNote notebooks as you need. Because you can search across all your notebooks, there's no need to store all of your notes in one notebook. In fact, you might find it easier to create a number of smaller notebooks (e.g., one for each course) than trying to keep all of your notes from every course in one large notebook.

All Winona State Students/Faculty have access to their OneNote by accessing it through their webmail or related app.

OneNote Web App
OneNote has a web application which is part of the online Office suite (Office 365) of web apps. You are able to access and edit your entire notebook from a browser. That’s true even if you’re on a machine that doesn’t have OneNote installed.
*Start in Office 365 here and click on OneNote.
Overview
Microsoft OneNote stores notebooks either locally or in a Sharepoint Office356 OneDrive folder. This documentation covers the process to backup notebooks and restore notebooks.

Where are Notebooks saved?
Find out where your Notebooks are stored.

* Go to File > Options > Save & Backup

* The Save section shows where you have your default folders saved.
* Quick Notes Section - this can be saved to your OneDrive folder
* Backup Folder - When you setup an automatic back up they are saved to this location. The default location for the WSU laptop image has this going to a hidden folder location c:\users\StarID\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote
* Default Notebook Location - If you create a notebook and don't change the location, it will be saved in this folder.
* Setup how often you want to automatically back up to occur.

Restore Your Notebooks
File > Options > Open Backups

Browse to the location that you backed up your Notebooks. If you are unsure where your backups are, look for the location in the Save & Backup menu displayed in section above.
Instructors can share Brightspace course components with colleagues in several ways. Sharing components or entire courses supports collaboration and reduces workload. Always ensure that copyright permissions are understood by all parties before sharing intellectual property.
What can't be shared
As general rules, you cannot share the following with anyone who is not the official instructor of record in the course. There are exceptions to these rules (e.g., teaching assistants, grade appeals), so contact TLT if you have specific questions.
*FERPA-protected student data. This includes the class list (i.e., who is enrolled in the course), any individuated feedback, formative or summative, and other individuated measures of engagement or performance (e.g., attendance).
*Student intellectual property. This includes copies of papers and online discussion posts of which students are the exclusive owners and copyright holders.

What can be shared
You can share the following with colleagues who are not the official instructors of record in the course.
*Structural components. This includes course appearance elements (e.g., custom homepages, widgets) that do not include copyright-protected assets (e.g., images) that only you have permission to use, your table of contents (i.e., modules and submodules), the grouping structure you created with the Groups tool, competencies and learning objectives you created with the Competencies tool, any release conditions you set on content and activities, and the structure of your grade book (e.g., categories, items, settings, formulae) that you created with the Grades tool. Note that any due, start, or end dates assigned to course components will be shared and may need to be adjusted by the recipient.
*Your intellectual property. This includes elements of your syllabus, course communication (e.g., announcements), and content and activities (e.g., quizzes, assignments, surveys, rubrics, checklists, discussion topics) that are your exclusive property.
*Open educational resources. This includes third-party content and activities copied into your course designated by the owner as shareable without permission (e.g., using a Creative Commons license). Links to third-party content that exists legally elsewhere and that you did not copy can be shared freely. This includes resources (e.g., YouTube videos) embedded into a file you created using the Brightspace HTML Editor.

Sharing methods
There are three ways that you can share Brightspace course components with your colleagues:
#Create an export package as a .zip file and share that file with your colleague.
#Create a sandbox course, copy your course components into that sandbox, and add your colleague to the sandbox as an instructor.
#Create a learning object repository (LOR), add course components to that LOR, and add your colleague as a trusted member of the LOR.
WSU offers many great programs to students at no additional charge. These programs are not pre-installed on the laptop when it is received. To install these programs, you should be on campus and have your network cord connected to ensure that the download goes quickly and smoothly. The applications are installed from the network via "Control Panel" through the "Get Programs" section on a Windows PC, from Software Center on Windows, and from Managed Software Center on the Mac.

It is preferred that you be ON CAMPUS when you do this. If you absolutely need one of the software programs and you are OFF CAMPUS you will need to login via VPN to connect to the WSU network. We cannot guarantee that the program will load successfully to your laptop from off campus. Some programs can take more than 20 minutes to install.

About this article
This article provides instructions for exporting and importing your Apple Safari bookmarks. It is intended for WSU students and employees in the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program who are scheduled to exchange their laptops in summer 2014. The names of the folders and the volume name of the drive used in the instructions correspond to those used on the laptops involved in the exchange. However, the same basic steps still apply to personally-owned computers.

Why export your Safari bookmarks?
Safari allows you to bookmark any website you visit, saving that site's unique address or URL to a personalized list. Later, instead of searching for the site or entering its address manually, you can simply select it from your bookmark list. You can manage your bookmark list by renaming links, organizing them into folders, and deleting them. Building a list of bookmarks is a great way to create a personal learning environment, customized to meet your needs. If you put a lot of time into it, you don't want to lose it. Safari saves your bookmark list locally on your device's hard drive. If something happens to your hard drive or you move to a new device, you don't want to have to build your bookmarks list again from scratch. You need to know how to save or export your list and copy or import it to another device.

About this article
This article provides instructions for exporting and importing your Google Chrome bookmarks. It is intended for WSU students and employees in the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program who are scheduled to exchange their laptops in summer 2014. The names of the folders and the volume name of drive used in the instructions correspond to those used on the laptops involved in the exchange. However, the same basic steps still apply to personally-owned computers.

Why export your Chrome bookmarks?
Chrome allows you to bookmark any website you visit, saving that site's unique address or URL to a personalized list. Later, instead of searching for the site or entering its address manually, you can simply select it from your bookmark list. You can manage your bookmark list by renaming links, organizing them into folders, and deleting them. Building a list of bookmarks is a great way to create a personal learning environment, customized to meet your needs. By default, Chrome saves your bookmark list locally on your device's hard drive. If something happens to your hard drive or you move to a new device, you don't want to have to build your bookmark list again from scratch. You need to know how to export your list, back it up, and import it to another device.

Using Chrome with a Google Account
If you have a Google account and sign in when using Chrome, anything you bookmark will be saved in the cloud. When you receive a new or re-imaged laptop, you can install Chrome, login to your Google Account, and all of your old bookmarks will be there. You do not need to export and import your bookmarks manually.

Exporting
#Open Chrome
#In the top right, click the Customize and Control Menu (Fig. 1) vertical ellipsis in red and blue boxes.
#Select Bookmarks and then choose the Bookmark Manager
#Choose the second vertical ellipsis (just below the Control Menu vertical ellipsis)
#Click the "Organize" option from the menu.
#Select Export bookmarks

Chrome will export your bookmarks as an HTML file, which you can then import into another browser or your Chrome browser on a new device. You will need to copy this file to your backup location when you switch devices.

Importing
#Open Chrome
#In the top right, click the Customize and Control Menu (Fig. 1, first vertical ellipsis)
#Select Bookmark and choose the Bookmark Manager option (second vertical ellipsis just below Control Menu)
#In the manager, click the "Organize" menu.
#Select Import bookmarks
About this article
This article includes general information about the WSU email service and instructions for accessing your WSU mailbox. It is intended for all WSU students and employees.

Our WSU email service
Microsoft Office 365 is Winona State’s email, file storage, and productivity solution for all employees and students. WSU provides email services accessible via the web to students, faculty, and staff as part of the E-Warrior Digital Life and Learning Program. Be sure and check your WSU email account regularly as this is the way that WSU communicates with you.

Accessing your WSU Microsoft 365 mailbox
This is the direct link to your Microsoft 365 dashboard on the Web. You may want to bookmark it.

To find this page from the Winona State webpage:
#Go to www.winona.edu.
#In the top menu bar click on "Info for" and choose your group (Faculty & Staff or Current Students)
#Under the Resources list, select Office 365 & Email.

Your login credentials are your StarID followed by "@go.minnstate.edu" for students and "@minnstate.edu" for employees . Your WSU email address, however, will remain your friendly email address, e.g. firstname.lastname@go.winona.edu for students and firstname.lastname@winona.edu for employees.

Setting your primary Minnesota State email address
If you are registered as a student or employee of more than one Minnesota State school, it is best to set your WSU address as your primary email address while you are attending WSU. Use the following steps to review and change your primary email address:
#Go to https://starid.minnstate.edu
#Click on the box for "Sign in to Profile"
#Sign in with your StarID and password (If you forgot your password, then go back and select the box to Reset your Password)
#At the top of the page, click "Office 365 Contact"
#Make sure your listed primary email is either First.LastName@go.winona.edu (for students) or Username@winona.edu (for employees)
#If it does not match the previous step, click "Select New Student Contact Card" and select the correct email address.

*Change your primary email address

WSU email policies
*You have a 50GB mailbox capacity
*We cannot forward your WSU email to another, non-WSU email address. According to FERPA Guide 2012 p 39: "Non-public educational data should never be sent to non-institutional assigned accounts... The institution would be held responsible if an unauthorized third party gained access to a student's education record..."
*We will never lease your email address to any advertisers and we take a pro-active approach to blocking unsolicited-bulk email messages that could clutter your inbox.
The new PC laptops (Dragonfly) have a small piece of metal: a webcam cover, so you can ensure you aren’t being watched while the camera’s not in use.

How to turn web cam cover ON and OFF?
If you look just above your webcam on your laptop, you will see a small piece of metal that slides. If you slide that metal piece to the right it will close your webcam by turning cover ON and if you slide metal to left it will open your webcam by turning the cover OFF.

About this Article
LinkedIn Learning is available to all WSU Students, Faculty and Staff. One of the ways LinkedIn Learning content can be shared is via a URL.

Sharing a Course or Video
You can browse to a course in LinkedIn Learning and then copy the URL at the top of the page and share this URL with others. A LinkedIn Learning account is required to view the course. Before sharing courses with students, make sure they have activated their WSU LinkedIn Learning account, and not the free LinkedIn Learning account that LinkedIn offers. Activate your LinkedIn Learning account article explains this process.

To share a video within a Course, open the video you want to share and then copy the URL at the top of the page to that video.

Share a Learning Collection
To share your Learning collection:

#Log in to your LinkedIn Learning account and click the Me icon in the top right corner.
#Select Collections from the dropdown.
#Click Share next to the collection you wish to share with others.
#From the Share this collection menu, select the dropdown that appears in the Shared With field:
*All LinkedIn members – To share your collection across LinkedIn. If you select this option, you’ll be provided with two separate share URLs – one for learners outside your organization and one for learners at WSU.

*Select Share with Winona State to get a link to share with users at WSU. Users will need to have a WSU activated account to view.

#Click Copy.

The URL will be copied to your clipboard. You can share the URL in an email or a module in Brightspace D2L.

Important: If you have custom content, this cannot be shared with people outside your organization.

About this article
This article includes instructions for setting your home page in several major web browsers. It is intended for all members of the WSU community.
Why set a browser homepage?
You probably spend a significant amount of time each day using a web browser. They are critical learning tools in your digital toolbox and can be personalized to meet your specific needs. Creating a personalized learning environment will help you find and use the information you need quickly. All major browsers allow you to personalize your browsing experience by changing the default homepage, or the page that's displayed every time you open your browser. When you install a new browser, a page associated with the company who built the browser will be set as your default homepage. You can change that to any page you wish. You can also configure your browser to load multiple pages as tabs across the top of your browser window. This is a real time saver if you have websites that you visit every day. Although it only takes a minute to type in the web addresses or select the sites from a list of favorites, these minutes add up.

Use WSU eHome
Consider adding the WSU eHome page as either your primary homepage or one of your home pages (e.g., on a second tab). There are separate eHome pages for students and employees which are custom-designed to provide you with campus news, calendar events, links to common campus resources, and links to Minnesota State services that you use regularly (e.g., timesheets, transcripts). These pages can also be personalized by adding links and news feeds. Note that access to these pages is restricted to those who have a WSU username and password. You will be asked to login with your WSU credentials the first time you access the eHome page and each time you change your WSU password. Also, some Minnesota State resources require you to enter your StarID. If you are ever asked if you want to setup Hassle Free Login, you can decide whether to opt into this feature at that point. If you decide to autologin, then you will not need to enter your StarID when accessing Minnesota State resources from the eHome page. For employees who use their StarID all the time, this can be a real time saver.
*Employee eHome
*Student eHome

Setting your homepage
All four major browsers allow you to set a single homepage using a very similar process. Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome also share a common process for setting multiple homepages as tabs. For some unknown reason, Safari makes it a bit more difficult to set multiple homepages, but it can be done using a bookmarks folder.

Google Chrome
#Open Chrome. If you have a Google account, login. When you make changes to your homepage settings, Google will save that information to the cloud. When you login to Chrome on another device, your homepages will be there.
#Navigate to the page you want to set as your new homepage. You can open multiple pages, one on each tab, if you wish. This will allow you to open multiple pages, not just one homepage, when you start Chrome.
#Select the Customize and control Google Chrome button.
#Select Settings.
#Under On startup, make sure Open a specific page or set of pages is selected. Select the Set pages link
#On the Startup pages window, select the Use current pages button. You can also add a page by entering the URL manually.
#Select OK

Mozilla Firefox
#Open Firefox and navigate to the page you want to set as your new homepage. You can open multiple pages, one on each tab, if you wish. This will allow you to open multiple pages, not just one homepage, when you start Firefox.
#Select the Open menu button and select Options
#On the General tab, select Use current page button. The default URL will be replaced by the URL(s) of the page or pages that you have open in Firefox currently. You can also enter the URL of the site you want to set as a home page manually. If you add more than one URL manually, separate each using the "|" (pipe) symbol.
#Select the OK button.

Apple Safari
Setting a single Safari homepage
#Open Safari and navigate to the page you want to set as your new homepage
#From the Safari menu, select Preferences
#On the General tab, select the Set to current page button. The default URL will be replaced by the URL of the page that you have open in Safari currently.
#Close the Preferences window
Setting multiple Safari home tabs
#Open Safari, select the Bookmarks menu, and select Add Bookmark Folder. The Bookmarks Sidebar will open.
#Type a name for your home bookmarks folder (e.g., "Home"). Press enter. Select the View menu and select Hide Bookmarks Sidebar.
About this article
This article describes how to create, award, and manage badges in certificates in a D2L course. It is intended for instructors.
Awards tool overview
From the Brightspace Help system:

The Awards tool enables instructors to provide merit-based awards to students. There are two types of awards: Badges, and Certificates.

Badges are awarded based on any criteria determined by the instructor. They are meant to provide digital markers that represent accomplishment throughout a course or program. Badges do not contribute to achieving a passing grade; however, badges are awarded for achievements that also can contribute to the type of work ethic that results in a passing grade. For example, an instructor might create a badge that is based on posting 15 discussion posts in the first month of a course, or on perfect attendance, or on academic excellence. These items are the types of trends that can help a learner to succeed in a course or program.

Certificates are also awarded based on criteria determined by the instructor. Certificates are similar to Badges, however, they include a PDF that users can print. Certificates typically indicate an official statement of certification or award at the end of a program, but can be awarded during the course for other criteria as well. Certificates can be awarded based on achieving a milestone that a learner can use for further academic or career success, such as passing a practical exam. Certificates also do not contribute to achieving a passing grade.

Badges and Certificates can be automatically awarded based on release condition criteria, or can be manually awarded.

How to use the Awards tool in your course and your program
There are many ways to use the Awards tool. Typically, badges are used to connote accomplishments that demonstrate mastery of a smaller content while certificates are used to document larger bodies of mastery, but in the end, the call is completely in the court of the teacher.

Here are a few examples of things that can be done. This is not meant to anything more than a few concepts to spark further thought and creativity.

* Grammar Badge - The student is awarded the grammar badge if she has written three theme-based papers for her composition course, each free of grammatical errors.
* Civic Action Badge - Once a student performs 20 hours of community service and writes a paper documenting the experience for class, he is awarded the badge. There may optionally be a minimum score required on the paper.
* Human Anatomy Expert Certificate - Complete the anatomy and physiology class, successfully complete a set of anatomy-based labs from the nursing program, and spend 25 hours taking courses like first aid and CPR from the Red Cross to earn the certificate.

Badges and certificates are viewable in the students D2L Brightspace profile. They can view their achievements at any time. Certificates, because they are PDF's, can be exported, printed, or attached to a portfolio.

Adding badges and certificates to your course
Badges and certificates are created within the Awards tool itself. (For step-by-step instructions, view the videos or link to Brightspace Help below.) Once created, the teacher can manually award them to the students or define release conditions that cause the award to be granted when the release conditions are met.

Brightspace comes with a set of badge and certificate art you can select for your awards. If you want something more custom, you can design your own art and use it within the Awards tool.
WSU Information Technology services supports three tools that can be used to administer a survey: Qualtrics, Microsoft Forms, and the Brightspace Survey Tool. All students and employees have access to Qualtrics and Forms, but only employees with Teacher access to a Brightspace course can create and administer surveys using the Brightspace Survey Tool.

Supported survey tools
Qualtrics
Qualtrics is an online, professional survey research tool that supports all types of surveys. It includes dozens of question types, distribution options, and reports. Qualtrics includes tools for conducting simple descriptive analysis and visualizations. Survey data can be exported into multiple formats, including Excel and SPSS. Qualtrics is a good tool for supporting complex surveys with multiple question types, branching, skip patterns, and other features.

Forms
Microsoft Forms is part of our WSU Office 365 license and can be accessed through your Office 365 web dashboard. All students and employees can create simple polls and forms using this tool and send them to anyone via email and other sharing options. Results are stored online, where you can view them live and export them as an Excel file. Forms is a good way to administer very simple polls quickly.

Brightspace Survey Tool
The Survey Tool in Brightspace mirrors the Quiz Tool, except that the questions do not have answers. Instructors can access the Survey Tool by opening a Brightspace course and selecting Surveys from the Assessments menu. Begin creating a survey by selecting the New Survey button. Brightspace surveys are a good way to gather data from students in your courses to stimulate discussion, measure student attitudes and viewpoints, or support other class activities. Your surveys can be anonymous or student results can be identified. You can also attach feedback to survey items that your students can receive immediately or at a time of your choosing.

IRB approval
You are responsible for obtaining IRB approval from our Grants and Sponsored Projects office for any survey that requires it.

The IHMC CmapTools software (for Mac and PC) empowers users to construct, navigate, share, and criticize knowledge models represented as Concept Maps. A concept map is a diagram showing the relationships among concepts. They are graphical tools for organizing and representing knowledge.

Concepts, usually represented as boxes or circles, are connected with labeled arrows in a downward-branching hierarchical structure. The relationship between concepts can be articulated in linking phrases such as "gives rise to", "results in", "is required by," or "contributes to".

The technique for visualizing these relationships among different concepts is called "Concept mapping".

Overview
All of the Microsoft OneNote notebooks that you use on your computer are stored within your C:Users:[StarID]:[specific folder] section on your computer, by default. This documentation covers the process for reconnecting your OneNote notebooks on your new laptop. If you stored or synchronized your OneNote content to another storage space (e.g. OneDrive) you will need to reconnect these notebooks.

Computer Steps
# Begin by making sure that you have made a backup copy (i.e. from D:Data) of your OneNote Notebooks folder.
# Once you have the OneNote Notebooks folder on your new laptop you need to connect OneNote to the Notebook folder by clicking on the File menu, click Open Backup.
# In the Open Backup dialog box, in the Backup folder, double-click the notebook folder that contains the file or files that you want to restore.
# Select one or more backup files to restore, and then click Open.

Online Steps
If you have setup your Microsoft Live Services then you will be able to save online and restore your notebooks from/to any computer. The location your OneNote notebooks will be saved to will be in your Microsoft OneDrive application. Your OneDrive application is located under the More option on the top right of your email screen.

# Open OneNote. Under New select on the Web option.
## If you already have Notebooks saved on your computer but want them to also be saved in OneDrive you will select the Share option.
## Then select a notebook (if you have multiple you are going to have to share each one individually).
## You will select on the Web option to share on.
## Sign in to you Live account if you have not yet already.
## Click on Share Notebook
# Name your Notebook.
# Sign in to you Live account if you have not yet already.
# Select on Create Notebook.
# Done. All changes will automatically be sent to your OneDrive in your email. You must remember to signed in to your Live account for these changes to sync.

What Cengage MindTap does
MindTap is the online learning platform that gives instructors complete course control. Craft personalized, engaging experiences that boost performance and deliver access to eTextbooks, study tools and more. For more information on how MindTap can be used in your class, refer to Cengage's website

Integrating MindTap into your course
Here are some resources from the Cengage support site:

* MindTap on Brightspace Training Resources This is Cengage's homepage for their Brightspace support materials. It includes links to user guides, presentations, training videos, quick start guides, and more.
* Integrate MindTap with your Brightspace course Step-by-step instructions for integrating MindTap into your course for the first time as well as using MindTap again in courses you copy.
* Getting Started: MindTap LMS Integration with Brightspace (slide deck) A slideshow tour of training materials.
* LMS Enhanced Course Copy LMS Enhanced Course Copy enables instructors to copy over their integrated courses within the LMS, eliminating the need to re-copy the Cengage course.
There is also an informative knowledge article from Minnesota State:

* Cengage Mindtap Integration (KA #1547)
#

How do my students use MindTap?
Once again, there are resources available from the Cengage support site:

* Accessing Your Cengage Materials Through Brightspace - Instructions on how students use Cengage products in a Brightspace course.

* MindTap Student Help - Includes system requirements and account access instructions.
Account creation
If this is your first time using a Cengage product, check out the step-by-step instructions for creating a Cengage account.

Assessing student work
If the MindTap elements you selected included graded items that were added to the Gradebook, you can verify the entries by selecting Grades from the course navigation menu and then accessing Manage Grades.

When a student completes an activity designated for grade synchronization, the score will automatically report to the corresponding column in the Brightspace Learn Grade Center. Only items explicitly selected in the Content Selector will have a grade column.

Please DO NOT edit the name of the grade center items after import. Doing so may cause grade synchronization to fail in a course that is copied forward for use in another term.

Relinking MindTap assignments
# Delete all of the MindTap links within your Content Modules
# Delete all MindTap grade columns from your gradebook (you have already completed this)
# Re-link the MindTap assignments
## Go to Course Admin
## Go to Course Builder
## From the Add Content box drag and drop the Cengage icon into the module where you need to link assignments
## Click on Select Content of the MindTap course you’re using
## On the Content Selector screen click on the assignment(s) that you need to link to that module (be sure that Add to Gradebook is also selected)
## Repeat steps c-e as needed
# Force an LMS sync from your MindTap gradebook to your D2L gradebook
## Launch into your MindTap gradebook
## Select Gradebook Actions (top right of the screen)
## Select Force LMS Sync
You should then see your grades start to trickle through into your D2L gradebook.

Macros are associated with the file to which they are applied. When you back up an Excel workbook that uses a macro, you will automatically save that macro as part of the backup copy of the workbook. This also applies to macros associated with other files.

If you want to back up a macro independent of the Excel file with which it is associated, open the Visual Basic Editor while Excel is running by pressing Alt+F11. In the project explorer, right-click on the module, form or class that you wish to save, select export and save it to your laptop, external, network, or web-based storage.

Restoring Macros
To restore your macro go to the Macros dialog box, choose Restore. Next the macro set file you saved from your old laptop and then choose OK.

Using Your Battery
When the external power adapter is not connected, your computer draws power from its internal battery. The length of time that you can run your laptop depends on what you are doing on your PC. Turning off features such as wireless technology and Bluetooth can help conserve battery charge, so can limiting the number of applications you have running.

Battery Icon on Menu
On all PC's, you can also see the percentage of your remaining battery life by hovering over the battery icon near the bottom right hand of your screen.

Charging a battery when the power adapter is connected to your computer, the battery recharges whether the computer is off, on, or in sleep. However, the battery recharges more quickly if the computer is off or in sleep. When the computer is on, you can adjust the battery settings by clicking on the battery status icon and selecting the 'More power options'. The first choice in this menu is the 'Balanced Power' option which will let you set features for both when the laptop is pulled in or running off of battery and is typically recommended for most users. The 'Power Saver' option allows you to turn off a few more features and functions that can save you even more battery life.

The battery charge level displayed is based on the amount of power left in the battery with the applications, peripheral devices, and system settings (i.e. mostly your display brightness) you are currently using. To conserve battery power, it is highly recommended to go into the Adjust screen brightness setting and lower the brightness of your laptop screen.

Battery Conservation Tips
The amount of work time your laptop battery can provide before you need to recharge depends on the applications and peripheral devices you’re currently using and the steps you take to conserve power while you work. For the best conservation of battery power, do the following:
*Disconnect bus-powered USB devices when they are not in use.
*Quit open applications that you are not using.
*Turn off wireless or Bluetooth wireless when they are not in use.
*Disconnect CD and DVD player when they are not in use.
*Reduce screen brightness.
*Set your laptop to sleep after inactivity of five minutes or less.

For more tips on conserving battery life see the 'Tell me more about power plans' links within the 'Power Options' menu.

Using Your Battery
When the external power adapter is not connected, your computer draws power from its internal battery. The length of time that you can run your MacBook Pro depends on what you are doing on your Mac. Turning off features such as wireless technology and Bluetooth can help conserve battery charge, so can limiting the number of applications you have running.

Battery Icon on Menu
On all Macs, you can also see the percentage of your remaining battery life by selecting the battery icon near the upper right hand of your screen and clicking "Show Percentage" from the drop down menu. By default this setting is set to show time remaining on the battery.

When the battery level eventually drops below 95 percent, it will charge all the way up to 100 percent.
Charging a battery when the power adapter is connected to your computer, the battery recharges whether the computer is off, on, or in sleep. However, the battery recharges more quickly if the computer is off or in sleep. When the computer is on, you can monitor the battery charge level using the battery status icon in the menu bar.

The battery charge level displayed is based on the amount of power left in the battery with the applications, peripheral devices, and system settings (display brightness, Energy Saver settings, and so on) you are currently using. To conserve battery power, close applications and disconnect peripheral devices not in use, and adjust your Energy Saver settings (see the next section).

Battery Conservation Tips
The amount of work time your MacBook Pro battery can provide before you need to recharge depends on the applications and peripheral devices you’re currently using and the steps you take to conserve power while you work. For the best conservation of battery power, do the following:
*Disconnect bus-powered USB or FireWire devices when they are not in use.
*Quit open applications that you are not using.
*Turn off AirPort or Bluetooth wireless when they are not in use. (Use the AirPort and Bluetooth status icons in the menu bar. If these icons don’t appear in the menu bar, you can turn them on in the Network and Bluetooth panes of System Preferences.)
*Disconnect CD and DVD drive when they are not in use.
*Reduce screen brightness using the brightness controls on the keyboard.
*Set the hard disk to sleep after a short time. In the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences, select the “Put the hard disk to sleep when possible” under the Battery option.
*Set your laptop to sleep after inactivity of five minutes or less. This setting is also found in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences.

Not everything you do on your Mac requires a heavy-duty application. For those smaller tasks, Mac OS X features Dashboard, which provides access to several fun and functional, mini applications called widgets.

Dashboard even includes widgets for some of your Mac applications, including Address Book and iTunes, which allow you to access your contacts and music, respectively, without having to switch over to the full application. But it doesn't end there, you can add more widgets to Dashboard and, if you're feeling really ambitious, you can even create your own widgets.

Use of Dashboard
1. Activate Dashboard by clicking the icon in the Applications folder.

2. A default set of widgets appears. You can move the widgets anywhere you want by simply dragging them, click and hold your mouse button on a widget and move your mouse—or finger, if you're using a trackpad.

3. To see all the widgets on your Mac, click the open (+) button in the lower-left corner of the screen.

4. The Widget Bar, which displays all widgets on your Mac, slides into view at the bottom of the screen. Click the arrow buttons on either side of the bar to display more widgets.

5. To add a widget to Dashboard, simply click an icon in the Widget Bar.

6. If you want to download more widgets, click the More Widgets button to go to the Apple Dashboard download webpage.

7. To remove a widget from Dashboard, be sure that the Widget Bar is displayed, then click the unwanted widget's close button (the round, black button with a white X).

8. To close the Widget Bar, click the close button on the lower-left part of the screen right above the Widget Bar.

9. To use a widget, just select it and do your thing. In other words, if you click the Dictionary widget, type a word in its search field. If you click the Stickies widget, type a note or two. If you click the Tile Game widget, start playing.

Widgets
Here's a closer look at the widgets you'll find preinstalled in Dashboard, and how to use them.
