Overview
If your laptop failed right now, could you restore all of your important files and information on your new laptop within an hour? It is absolutely essential that you back up important information from your laptop to External Hard Drive, a Flash Drive, and/or Cloud Storage. Your laptop can be lost, stolen, dropped, spilled on, or otherwise rendered unusable at any time. Its hard drive can fail without warning, making it impossible to access any of its data. If the only copy of your important intellectual property, hard work, and creative effort is on your laptop, you are running a terrible risk of losing it all forever. This prospect is disturbing enough for students, who risk losing semesters of academic work, but it is of critical importance for Winona State University employees who risk losing tremendous professional and institutional investments. Backing up your laptop data is an easy thing to do, there are a number of good, relatively inexpensive storage solutions available, and there is plenty of help available for both students and employees who have questions.

*Students - Contact the Digital Learning Center (457-5240 Option 1; [mailto:dlc@winona.edu dlc@winona.edu])
*Faculty and Staff - Contact TLT in the Professional Resource Center (457-5240 Option 3; [mailto:tlt@winona.edu tlt@winona.edu])

Your path to backup enlightenment
Laptop hard drives fail all the time and the files stored on them are often unrecoverable. If this happens to you, would you be back in action without any significant interruption or data loss as soon as you get a new laptop? To achieve this state of technological enlightenment, follow the principles below:
#Think of your laptop as a desk, not a file cabinet. Your files should be stored on network, cloud, or external drives where you can access them from multiple devices and copy them to your laptop as needed.
#Backing up should not be an event. Managing your digital assets should be a continuous process that is as habitual and automated as possible.
#Use network and cloud storage. You should never have an important file on your laptop that isn't copied to network, cloud, or external storage.
#Know where your files are. Develop a folder structure that works for you, revisit it regularly to refine it as needed, and stick to it.
#Keep your laptop beautiful. Don't leave your files strewn about and make a point to tidy up your laptop at least once a week.

Syllabus
Song Parody Project: An individual student or groups of 2 students will creatively come up with a title and words to an established song that describes a concept from class. This project is worth 120 points, the equivalent of an exam. I am very flexible with the concept, but, you HAVE to clear your idea with me first to ensure that we are on the same page. The length of your parody will increase or decrease your points awarded. One way to do this is to find an instrumental or karaoke version of your song that you could play while singing/rapping your words, all the while recording the audio. We will go over a recommended way of completing this project during class. At a minimum the project will include an audio recording of the music and the singing/rapping as well as be 1’30” in length assuming a ~15” intro. This minimal effort will get you 84% (~101 points) if done very well. Additional points will be available if you make the recording longer and/or complete an audio and video recording (see below). You will create a private YouTube audio/video file for me to grade. I will be the only one seeing your recording, without permission. You will have technical support for this project which I will describe.
*Clear topic with me (I can disapprove of your topic)
*Hand in a Word document (dropbox) with the original words and your parody words when project is completed.
*Upload your recording to a private YouTube “channel” for grading purposes.
Grading of your project will be based mostly on the quality of your parody. Most songs will tell a story of some kind. Do your song title and “story” make sense and does it follow a theme? I need to be able to understand, for the most part, what you are singing/rapping. You will earn 6 additional possible points (5% of total grade for the project) for every 30” of singing/rapping and/or adding video/elaborateness of the video. Example, simply by adding a basic video of you singing/rapping will add 6 possible points. Adding that video plus a 2 (30 additional seconds) minute audio will earn you 12 additional possible points. Another example, more elaborate video will earn you 12 additional possible points (adding video points plus points for a more elaborate video). The more you do, the larger the possible points. There is some vagueness to the grading … ask questions for clarity!

Recomended Process
*1 Choose a song, check to make sure you can find an instrumental version to use in the final project.
*2 Rewrite the lyrics to fit the concept you wish to cover.
*3 Create a new song title that supports your concept.
*4 Record your lyrics on your WSU iPad using Hokusai, an audio recording app. (For detailed information on steps 4, 5,and 6: Hokusai for iPad)
*5 Import your music to your recording in Hokusai.
*6 Create and export your new song.
*7 Record your video on your WSU iPad in iMovie, play the song in the background to follow along while you film. (For detailed information on steps 7, 8, 9,and 10: iMovie for iPad)
*8 You will be able to edit your video in iMovie.
*9 Remove the sound from your video, and add your recorded song into your project for a clearer sound.
*10 Export your video when you are finished.
*11 Upload your video to YouTube.

What's OneDrive for Business?
Microsoft OneDrive for Business is an industrial-strength, business-class file storage and management service built on Microsoft's SharePoint technology. OneDrive for Business is in the cloud, a geeky way of saying that your files are stored off campus on a Microsoft file server that you can access via the Internet. OneDrive for Business is an important component of Microsoft's new vision for business productivity and collaboration, anchored by their web services: Office 365 and SharePoint Online. Every WSU student and employee has a OneDrive for Business.

IMPORTANT NOTE
"OneDrive for Business" and "OneDrive" are two, separate cloud storage apps.
* "OneDrive for Business" is included in your Office 365 Suite provided to you by WSU and provides you with 1T of cloud storage space.
*"OneDrive" is a personal cloud storage application that you need to setup on your own for your personal use if you wish to use it.

The easiest way to compare OneDrive for Business to a personal OneDrive account is that the Office 365 OneDrive for Business offers more features and is mainly used for professional organizations, whereas regular OneDrive is mainly for personal use and has less features. WSU does not support a Personal OneDrive account.

*All OneDrive for Business network servers are located in the continental United States
*Integrated with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2013 (e.g., shows up on your device as a location to which you can save files)
*Upload and access many common file types from multiple devices using your favorite web browser
*Organize your cloud storage using your own folder structure
*Share files and folders with others at WSU and beyond (Note: never store or share private data in OneDrive)
*Sync your cloud files and folders to your Windows computer (Mac OS X synchronization coming soon)
*iOS tablet apps for viewing, editing, and uploading your files
* Click on “Add to Cart” VMware
* Click on “Checkout”
* Scroll to the bottom of the license and click “I Accept”
* Copy the Serial Number located near the middle of the page in Red.
* Then select “Start Download” on the same page.
Come to the open session
* Bring your receipt into Somsen 207 during one of the open session times.
* Tell the Front Desk worker that you would like VMware installed on your Mac.

What is there are no open sessions scheduled?
* If there are no sessions scheduled (ex: in the middle of the semester) the Front Desk worker will take your information and put a 1:1 call in for you. There are times when we are able to help you immediately if staff is available.
* If you need a 1:1 for this the call will be put into the DLC queue and a DLC STAR will contact you asap to setup a time for you to come in and VMware installed.
3. Go to your form library, click on New > Form to open up your form.
4. Copy the URL and paste it into the Notepad document that you have open. We will call this URL 2.

5. Replace everything after SOURCE= in URL 2 up until the first ampersand (&) with URL 1.

6. This is the URL you will use when you post a link to the form on the existing worksite or Portal page for the viewer to fill out.

CUtzman12: /* On Campus Help */

Although these instructions are mainly for the PC - Mac PowerPoint is basically the same. Any differences are marked below.

A quick and easy way to create professional looking posters is to create them in PowerPoint 2007 or PowerPoint 2010. Posters created in PowerPoint are also the easiest to print at the WSU Media Color Printing Center in Somsen 207.

Important Things to Remember
*You must resize your canvas BEFORE you begin designing your poster. To size your canvas = In PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 click on Design, then Page Setup. Enter the width and height of your poster here and also if you want it to be displayed as portrait or landscape. (The normal poster size is 24" by 36" - portrait)
*The canvas that appears will be sized to the dimensions that you inserted above. You are ready to begin designing your poster.
*KIS - Keep it simple
*You can add graphics, text, tables, background colors, etc, to make your poster attractive. Be sure to follow copyright laws if you will be using music, video or graphics from the internet.
*Be careful when working with pictures and graphics. They may distort if you make them larger or smaller than they really are.
*When your poster is printed on the Somsen 207 Media Printing cartridge color printer the colors may not match exact.

Saving to PDF
*After you save your completed poster in PowerPoint you will need to save it again as a PDF file. It is the PDF file that you will take/send to Somsen 207 Media Printing to have printed.
**On a PC - File, Save As, Change the "Save as type" to PDF(*pdf.)
**On a Mac - (Mac)/Saving to PDF
This page shows how to remove a News Item on your D2L course homepage.

Dismissing a News Item
News Items age and become irrelevant over time. If the list of News Items in a course gets too long or just needs some clean-up, individual items can be removed from the published list.

You can remove a News Item from the home page by clicking the X to the right of the News Item headline in the News Widget. (See below.)
Alternatively, you can remove a News Item from the home page by following these steps:
# Click the arrow next to News in the News Widget and select Go to News Tool. (See right.)
# Click the arrow next to the headline of the News Item to be dismissed and select Dismiss from widget to retain the News Item in the News Tool but remove it from the home page or Delete to remove the News Item completely.

__NOTOC__
Some may not know there is a differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com is presented by some of the same developers who work on WordPress. WordPress.com puts to use the same Open Source software which you can download at WordPress.org. the .com version also does the hosting and managing of the software for you. WordPress.org versions need to be installed on your own server or with a 3rd party provider, such as, networksolutions.com.
WordPress.com
Benefits
* It's free and much easier to set up
* Setup, upgrades, spam, backups, security, and more - are automatically taken care of
* 100+ themes provided which you can modify (to an extent) by editing the CSS
* Your website (blog) that you create here is hosted on many servers, so it is very unlikely the server will overload because of traffic
* Posts are automatically backed up
* You may get extra traffic to your site by being featured on blogs of the day and tags
* You can network with other bloggers like you using tag and friend surfer
* Your login is secure (SSL) so you can confidently use WiFi
* You need to use html code to create a table on a page
Cons
* Cannot run a custom theme
* Cannot modify the PHP code behind your blog
* Cannot upload plugins
* FTP and shell access are not included
* Must pay to upgrade to the VIP program on WordPress.com to run custom themes and have complete control over PHP and CSS codes
* Free URLs are not clean (www.yoursite.wordpress.com)

WordPress.org
Benefits
* Software download is free, but have to install it on a webserver
* Downloadable themes and plugins are free
* Plugins can enhance your site dramatically
* Ability to upload custom themes
* Ability to upload plugins
* Ability to post from email
* Complete control to change code
* Ability to add multiple users/administrators
* Clean URLs (www.yoursite.com)

Cons
* Need to pay for a web host
* Requires more technical knowledge to set up
* The blogger is completely responsible for the site, such as, stopping spam, backing up site, managing your server correctly, upgrading software manually when a new version comes out
* Your server may "go down" if there is a large spike in traffic
By delivering simplified administration through central management and providing critical visibility into threats and vulnerabilities, Forefront Client Security helps you protect your business with confidence and efficiency. Forefront Client Security integrates with your existing infrastructure software, such as Microsoft Active Directory, and complements other Microsoft security technologies for enhanced protection and greater control.

Basics to Use
You really need to do nothing but let it do its job automatically.

It has been configured to:

*provide an integrated antivirus and antispyware engine
*provide real-time protection with the Windows Filter Manager. By using “mini-filter” technology with the Windows Filter Manager, Forefront Client Security is able to scan virus and spyware files before they run, providing better security against spyware and blended threats (for example, spyware that infects a PC through backdoor Trojans or other means). The other benefit to using the Windows Filter Manager is that end-user disruption (system slowdowns) is minimized during real-time scans for both viruses and spyware.
*quickly scan in-memory processes, targeted directories, and common malware extensibility points to ensure that the client machine is malware-free at all times.
*remove malware and restore a damaged system
*periodically scan your computer and automatically scan for viruses and spyware whenever you connect to the internet, download files, receive e-mail.

Please do not override the automatic settings. You can postpone a scan when you are using the computer, but you should not turn the scanning off permanently.

Forefront does not set up an firewall for the computer. The network domain of WSU provides a firewall separately.

When Forefront Detects a Virus or Spyware
Forefront will automatically "quarantine" or isolate the infected or potentially dangerous files in a location where they will not harm your computer.

The Forefront Icon on your toolbar at the bottom of the screen will change from green to red, and a message should appear when you start-up. Clicking on the red icon will give you instructions about what viruses were found and how you should take steps to permanently remove it.

The viruses and spyware that get through to computers typically come about because the user has inadvertently permitted them to be installed through some sort of "executable" file. See Viruses/Spyware for more information.
About This Article
This article describes how mobile computing, specifically tablets, was piloted in Prof. Oswald Shanalingigwa's SOCW 355 Multicultural Issues to transform teaching and learning.
<noinclude>
Intended Audience
WSU instructors interested in past faculty experience with tablet devices in the classroom.
</noinclude>
Summer 2013 iPad Pilot
Students in this course had access to an iPad tablet to use throughout the summer semester along with several apps selected by Dr. Shanalingigwa for use in class and in the field.

How the iPads are Used in SOCW 355
In SOCW 355, Professor Shanalingigwa sends his students into the field to study culture, multiculturalism, assimilation, pluralism, citizenship, immigration, and refugee status first hand. Students need to communicate with each other and the instructor from the field and send back evidence and artifacts in the form of notes, videos, and audios in a timely manner.

Professor Shanalingigwa chose to pilot iPads in his SOCW 355 class to assist students in their communication and recording from the field as well as their work from home. This left the major objective of this tablet pilot to be:
*Determine whether the iPad would simplify and speed up student communication. Dr. Shanalingigwa hoped to discover the value of the iPads as tools in learning. Students found the tablets' size and mobility handy and found communication easier.

Outcomes
Changes in the classroom
*Responses to assignments came faster. Because of the flexibility of the iPads, students were able to quickly record, edit, and transfer artifacts from site visits to Professor Shanalingigwa. Students are expected to complete their assignments anywhere in the United States but to get their captured "real moments" sent back to Professor Shanalingigwa within a few hours.

Recommendations
*Configure the iPads to support Word and PowerPoint documents. Applications that support viewing and reading of standard Office documents should be standard issue on all iPads.

iPad Applications Employed in SOCW 355
Professor Shanalingigwa used the following applications in his SOCW 355 iPad pilot:
*Dropbox
*Facebook

Descriptions, pricing, and links to iTunes for each of these applications is available on the iPad Pilot Applications page.

Why use iPad for Videos?
*WSU has provided students with free access to download and use iMovie with WSU supported devices like the Apple Mini iPad.
*The answer is mobility.
::If you do not have a video camera to record your project (you can rent out Flipcams from Walk-in Tech Support) you or your partner may use the iPad to record and quickly edit the movie/rough draft for class.
*Also, Our goal at WSU is to have students become comfortable with all kinds of technology and all the ways you can use them. Enjoy!

iMovie General Overview
*1 (Project Preview): Plays the current progress of your movie including any edits or added effects.

*2 (Event Library): This window contains all video, audio and image files that are located in your iPad. iMovie also has audio files that come with the app which you may use.

*3 (Project Workbench): Video clips and images you use for your project will be displayed here. Shows all clips and any special effects added to your movie.

*4 (Project Settings): Allows you to integrate a built-in theme that iMovie has provided you with.

*5 (Narration): Allows you to add in narration over images and or video clips.

*6 (Video Recorder): Allows you to record a video and automatically integrate it into your project workbench

*7 (Undo & Redo): Quick and easy way to undo an edit. To revert or redo simply touch and hold the icon.

*8 (Help): Clicking on this will open the iMovie's Help Wizard which will attempt to answer your questions.

*1 This will allow you to trim the clip by dragging the video selected.

*2 This allows you to put your video into slow motion.

*3 Here, you can adjust the volume. You have the ability to make it louder than it was recorded and to drop the volume to make the clip silent.

*4 You can add in a variety of different text boxes to your video. It includes different effects on the text.

*5 Allows you to change the colors or filters on the video.

*6 Here you have the option to split your clip, detach the audio from the video, copy the clip, and delete unwanted parts.

Importing media to your iPad
Importing any other content like photos, apps, and music follows the same process shown below.
:1 Connect your iPad to your computer. If this is the first time connecting your devices ITunes will ask you to activate your iPad by plugging in your passcode.
:: Your passcode is the 4 digit key to log into your iPad.
:: iTunes will also ask you if you want to trust the computer the iPad is connected to, confirm that you do trust it.

:2 Locate where you have saved your movie file on your computer and remember the location. Make sure the movie file is in a format that is compatible with Apple products. .MP4 is the most common video format for Apple products.
:: If you need to convert your video to a file format that is compatible with Apple products use HandBrake. Make sure it is in .MP4 format.

:3 Make sure that you have selected your iPad in the iTunes window so that your videos transfer to the correct location.
*Most important!!! Make sure that you select 'Photos' and check mark 'Include Videos' as well. As of right now this is the only way to import videos that will be recognized by iMovie.

:4 Make sure to log in to your iPad to double check that the videos are there. Open up your iMovie app and any pictures and videos should be there.

Exporting your project
*You will click on your project when you open up the iMovie app. There will be four options displayed:
:1 Play
:2 Share
:3 Trash
:4 Edit

*When you click on the Share button a window will appear displaying multiple options to export to.
:1 A list of media services that will allow you to export your project. If you swipe to the right the Mail icon is there.
:2 Save Video will export your project to your iPad in the Photos app. You would think that videos would be sent to the Videos app but that is just how Apple designed it.
:*Currently the most reliable way to get your media from your iPad to your computer is to plug in the iPad to your computer. For PCs it will show up in your Computer application as a device which will allow you to open the device and manually drag and drop your media content to the desired location on your computer.
:*For Macs you have to trust your iPad with the computer first. Make sure your iTunes is up to date or else your iPad will not be recognized. Since your projects are saved in your Photos app the project will appear in iPhoto. Iphoto will open up and ask if you would like to import your iPad's content.
:3 iTunes uploads your video to the File Sharing tab on your iTunes application on your computer. Currently there seems to be a problem where the video won't actually export this way.

This article includes instructions for saving files to your Microsoft for Business cloud storage. It's intended for students and employees using a Mac laptop.

What's OneDrive for Business?
Microsoft OneDrive for Business is our "cloud storage" solution at WSU, which is a fancy way of saying that you all have 1 TB of storage on off-campus servers owned by Microsoft. You can upload files from your laptop or tablet to your OneDrive for Business and work on those files directly using Microsoft Office applications. This is a great option for safeguarding your files if your devices should ever fail or need to be exchanged. By default, any file you upload to your OneDrive for Business cannot be accessed by any other user unless you decide to share it. Since you can now share files using OneDrive for Business, you should never store private data here (more on data security). OneDrive for Business is much more than just cloud storage and we encourage you to learn more this powerful tool.

How to save files to your OneDrive for Business
*Login to your OneDrive for Business account. Students can do this through Webmail. Employees can gain access from the faculty and staff eHome page.
*Create and/or open a folder in which to upload files. To create a folder, select New then Folder (Figure 1). Give the folder a name and select Create.
*Open that OneDrive for Business folder by selecting it

*Select Upload, find the file on your computer, and then select Open
*You can also drag-and-drop files from the Finder window to the OneDrive for Business window, the Drop here... will show up. See Figure 2

Pro tips
*You cannot upload folders to OneDrive for Business directly. You first need to create folders in OneDrive and then upload files to them.
*There are some useful keyboard shortcuts when selecting multiple files to drag-and-drop: Ctrl+A (select all items), Shift+Left Click (selects all items between two nonadjacent items), Control+Left Click (selects specific nonadjacent items0.
Adobe Photoshop, commonly referred to as just Photoshop, is a graphics editing program. It is currently the leader in bitmap editing and image manipulations.

The version available at WSU is the Creative Cloud edition, providing many advanced features in addition to the robust editing and photo manipulation tool which are stock and trade to the program.

For example you can now use:
*3-D painting and rendering tools to create and modify three dimensional creations from within Photoshop.
*Content Aware Scaling to stretch an image while not distorting the main figures within the frame.
*Adjustments Panel to modify an image by adjusting the saturation or intensity, without destroying the original data, making it easy to make changes as you go. This also makes it easy to choose certain areas to apply effects to.

In our online help we will describe some of the basic things that every one might need to do.

Platform: PC, Mac | Version: Office 2010, 2013
About this article
This article includes instructions for archiving your Outlook mailbox and links to related articles. It is intended for all members of the WSU community who use the Microsoft Outlook desktop application to manage their official (e.g., username@winona.edu) WSU mailbox.

Where is your WSU "mailbox?"
This depends on whether you are an employee or a student:
*Employees. WSU uses local Microsoft Exchange servers to manage and store all employee email, calendar entries, tasks, and contacts associated with your official WSU email account (e.g., username@winona.edu) or "mailbox." Your mailbox and all of the information in it is stored on a network server on the Winona campus. You then use an application like Microsoft Outlook to access your mailbox. The process of opening Outlook on your laptop and reading your email does not move the messages to your laptop. They are still stored on the sever until you delete or archive them. This helps you protect this information and access it from multiple devices (e.g., your laptop, your tablet).
*Students. All WSU student email is stored on Microsoft network servers located off campus. This is often referred to as "cloud storage."

What's an Outlook archive?
When you create an Outlook archive, you move selected email messages and other information from the server to your laptop. A copy of this information is not retained on the server. The archive is saved as a file to a location on your laptop that you specify. You can do this either manually or automatically (e.g., once a week). Outlook does not archive email by default. You must enable this feature.

Why archive?
*Reduce the size of your mailbox on the server. If you tend to use your WSU mailbox like a file cabinet to store years and years of email messages, your mailbox will run out of space eventually and you will begin receiving warnings. If you don't reduce the size of your mailbox, you will not be able to send or receive mail. Archiving is one way to remove email and other information from your mailbox on the server and still retain it in a form that you can use through Outlook.
*Move from one email server to another. If you are leaving WSU and wish to retain some of the information stored in your mailbox for use on another email system, an archive file is something you can save and take with you.

What's the risk of archiving?
If something happens to your laptop's hard drive (e.g., virus, physical damage), you may not be able to recover that archive file. If you do archive your mailbox, create a backup copy of your archive file. Also, if you are archiving email messages that contain private data and/or confidential information and you back up that archive file, be sure that the storage media or device is encrypted. Your laptop hard drive is already encrypted, but if you save your archive to a flash drive or external hard drive, it needs to be encrypted to that no one can open it if it gets lost or stolen.

How to archive in Outlook on a PC
*To start the archive process, click the "File" tab on the ribbon. Next click on "Cleanup Tool" down arrow and select "Archive".

*The Archive dialog box displays. Select "Archive this folder and all subfolders" and select a folder to archive. To archive all your email, select the node with your email address at the top.

*Click the "Archive items older than" drop-down list to select the latest date for items to be archived. Choose a date to archive all items older than the date you select.

*You can change the name and location of the Archive file in the field next to browse. If you are archiving to an existing .pst file, then select Browse to locate that file.
How to backup & restore your PC Outlook archived email
When you switch to a new laptop or desktop, your email in Outlook will automatically show up when you login to Outlook. Your archived mail will not show up until you add it into your Outlook client on the computer you want to view them. These files will be saved locally to your computer, so they can only be viewed on the computer that you save the files to.

Steps to backup your .pst files
#It is best to search your computer for all *.pst files. Usually they will be stored in a folder called 'Outlook'.
#The .pst file(s) will need to be saved to where you store your backup files if you want to view these messages on your new computer.
Steps to restore your archived mail to your new computer
#Copy the archive.pst file that is in your backup folder to a folder on your new computer. Usually we store these files in a folder called 'Outlook'.
#In Outlook select File - Accounts Settings - Account Settings - Data Files Tab - Add
#Browse to where you saved your Archive.pst file
#OK

How to Find your Archived Emails in Outlook

In the left nav of your Outlook email you will see a folder with the name of the .pst file that you added.

How to archive in Outlook on a Mac
*First you will need to create a folder to store your archived email.
*Right-click (or ctrl-click) the Winona folder and select 'New Folder'. Give the folder a name like Archived Mail.
*Next you setup a rule by selecting from the ribbon Tools > Rules.
*Add a rule - use the + at the bottom of the window.
*Name the rule from "untitled" to something meaningful like "Archive email".

*In the section called When a new message arrives: define the criterion as "Date Received" + "is Greater than or equal to" + "180" ... days old to apply to messages older than 180 days (for a 6-month archive rule).
*In the section called Do the Following: define the action as "Move message" + "Archived Mail (On My Computer)" Note: if you do not see the folder you wish to archive to, you will need to click on the drop-down arrow next to "Move Message" and select Choose Folder...then search for the archive folder. Under the folder name, the location "On My Computer" should be displayed.
*Click the checkbox for Enabled.
*Ok
*Run the archive Rule:
*Go to the folder in your inbox that you want to archive. If you have subfolders, you will need to do each one individually.
*From the ribbon select Message > Rules > Archive email. This will archive all email 180 days or older based on the rule you created.
How to backup & restore your archived email
Backup your .mbox file
* Open Outlook and find your archived email folder. Should be under 'On My Computer'
* Drag this folder to where you are storing your backup. A .mbox file will be created with your email in it.
Restore your Archived Email
* You will need to copy the .mbox file from your backup location to a folder on your hard drive on your computer.
* Your archived email .mbox file can only be viewed in Outlook 2011 . The default email client on your new laptop is Microsoft Outlook for Mac on your Dock. You will need to open Outlook 2011 and restore your archived email file using Outlook 2011 application.
* Open your Applications folder and you will find a yellow which is Outlook 2011. Open this Outlook.
* Go to File
* Select Import
* Contacts or messages from a text file - next
* Import messages from an MBOX-format text file
* When you want to view your archived email, you will need to use the Outlook 2011 application.

Pro tips for archiving
*Archiving is risky, so don't do it just to support your own bad habits. If you have an email hoarding problem or your mailbox is a mess, seek help. TLT ([mailto:tlt@winona.edu tlt@winona.edu]) would be happy to help you. Ken Graetz (talk) 08:32, 16 May 2014 (CST)
*Many people don't realize that Outlook saves copies of every email message you send, including attachments. Enormous Sent mail folders are typically why people run out of space on the server. If you just archive your Inbox folder, you won't solve this problem. You either need to archive your Sent mail folder or clean it out occasionally to keep your mailbox size under control. ==About This Article==
This article describes how mobile computing, specifically tablets, was piloted in Prof. Aaron Wangberg's MATH 160 Calculus I to transform teaching and learning.
<noinclude>

Intended Audience
WSU instructors interested in past faculty experience with tablet devices in the classroom.
</noinclude>
Spring 2013 iPad Pilot
Students in this course had access to an iPad tablet to use throughout the spring semester along with several apps selected by Dr. Wangberg for use in class and in the field.

How the iPads are Used in MATH 160 and MATH 212
<table width="100% cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" border="0" style="vertical-align:top;">
<tr>
<td width="50%" style="vertical-align:top;">
Traditionally, math classes teach an understanding of mathematical principles and promote the use of these principles to solve problems. These two operations, the first being comprehension and the second application, represent the second and third levels of competency in Bloom's Taxonomy. With the introduction of the iPads and their associated applications into the classroom, MATH 160 and MATH 212 students are now able to investigate the affects of variables within the problem, connecting and explaining how the modification to the variables change the results. These skills are part of the analysis level of Bloom's, the fourth level of the Taxonomy.

All student work is recorded and submitted to the instructor. The applications on the iPad give immediate feedback to the students whom can then replay their work and find where they may have gone astray. Dr. Wangberg can replay individual student solutions in class for discussion or view larger numbers of solutions offline to look for patterns in errors.

Professor Wangberg used the iPads to accomplish several key objectives of the course that would be difficult or impossible utilizing only traditional educational methods. The iPads and their associated applications enabled Professor Wangberg to:
*Improve student understanding and advance to a higher level of Bloom's Taxonomy. Because the applications give immediate feedback to the students and allows the student to then go back and discover their errors through the recording, students move from the comprehension and application levels of Bloom's to analysis.
*Collect data on student understanding and use as input into the course. Because the recordings are made available to the teacher, Dr. Wangberg can use real student work for discussion purposes in the class as well as look for areas where students consistently went awry in their solutions.
</td>
<td width="5%" style="vertical-align:top;">
</td>
</td></tr>
</table>

Outcomes
Changes in the classroom
*Students are more engaged in the classroom. The students talked more, collaborated on solutions, evaluated peer work, and were more engaged in general.
*Learning improved. Because feedback was immediate and the work could be replayed for correction, students knew right away where they went wrong and could learn the correct way to solve the problem.
*Changes made to teaching method. As student work was reviewed and patterns in error came to light, teaching methods could be modified to better explain the areas where confusion began.

Recommendations
*Large format iPads more useful for this work. Because of the need for maximum screen space to solve the Calculus problems, full-sized iPads were recommended.

iPad Applications Employed in MATH 160 and MATH 212
Professor Wangberg used the following applications in his MATH 160 and MATH 212 iPad pilot:
*WeBWorK

Descriptions, pricing, and links to iTunes for each of these applications is available on the iPad Pilot Applications page.

Professor Wangberg also employed some custom applications he and his research cohort created, including a graphing calculator and a digital whiteboard. For more information on these applications, contact Dr. Wangberg.

About this article
This article includes instructions for saving files from your Apple MacBook to your personal campus network storage. It is intended for employees. Students do not have personal campus network storage. They have OneDrive for Business only.

What's personal campus network storage?
Every employee has 4 GB of personal network storage on a local campus network server. You can use this storage for all sorts of work-related files, but it is highly recommended for any private university data (e.g., student grades, employee performance reports). Network storage is mandatory for highly sensitive private data (e.g., social security numbers). Review the data sensitivity and file storage article for more information.

How to save files to your personal network storage
#Select the “Go” menu, and select “Connect to Server….”
#For your personal network storage area, use: smb://store.winona.edu/users/YOUR-STARID
#Once the “Connect to Server…” is selected, a dialog box below will appear on the screen. This is where you will select the network share that needs to accessed. Simply select the store that needs to be accessed and click on the “Connect” button. This will mount a network drive on your desktop and a finder window will open displaying the contents of the selected network share.
#You can now drag and drop files to this location.

Pro tips & VPN Client Information
*When accessing your personal drive from off campus, a VPN connection is required.
*You will fill up the 4 GBs quickly if you store a lot of media (e.g., pictures, movies, music). Instead, use this space to store important school-related files that you absolutely cannot lose.

CUtzman12: /* Installing the app */

__NOTOC__

The Microsoft Outlook App is available on both the Apple App Store and the Android Play Store and is a great app for checking your Webmail on a mobile device. Outlook for iOS and Android lets you manage Outlook.com and other email accounts, calendars, contacts, and files without switching between different apps.

NOTE: There have been documented issues with Outlook Calendars for users with multiple iOS devices, including events that do not display in the calendar or events that repeat within the same time slot. Unconfiguring your email and calendar from the default iOS apps (Mail and Calendar) and using the Outlook application seems to solve this problem.

Considerations before installing the app
To avoid issues with your outlook calendar like duplicate entries you will need to turn off Apple Mail/Calendar settings on every device that talks to your WSU email, including all iPads, iPhones and Mac laptops.

Once every Apple device has been switched to Outlook, you may find some existing calendar entries need to be fixed manually. Duplicate calendar entries may need to be deleted and reentered manually.

To turn Apple mail and calendar off, go to your iPhone/iPad Settings. Select “Mail, Contact, Calendars” in the left column. Under Accounts on the right, select your WSU email account. On the next screen that opens, turn off the calendar and email options. 

Installing the app
To install the app simply open up either the App Store (for Apple) or the Play Store (for Android) and search for 'Microsoft Outlook'. Make sure that you choose 'Microsoft Outlook' and not 'Outlook Web App', because they are separate applications. Outlook Web App is for accessing Outlook from a web-browser.

After you've installed the application open it and select "Get Started".

Then Enter your "StarID email" address (StarID followed by @winona.edu (ab1234cd@winona.edu)

After that it will redirect you to Winona State's login page where you will need to enter your StarID and password to finish setting up your account.

Your username is your StarID followed by @winona.edu (ab1234cd@winona.edu).

Then select "Maybe Later".

Select "Skip"

One helpful tip is that in your Inbox, there are two tabs. The first is Focused Inbox which sorts your email into more important email and puts that into the Focused tab, and the other is the Other Inbox which groups the lesser important emails.

Features
Besides the basic uses of email there are also Calendar and File Viewer features within the app.

*You can access the Calendar by clicking the Calendar icon after hitting the drop down menu in the top left of the app. From there, you can create events and view your schedule directly.

*You can also access the files that were sent to you as attachments in your email. Click on the Files icon and it will list all the files sent to your email.
Overview
Microsoft OneNote stores notebooks either locally or in a Sharepoint Office356 OneDrive folder. This documentation covers the process to backup notebooks and restore notebooks.

Where are Notebooks saved?
Find out where your Notebooks are stored.

* Go to File > Options > Save & Backup

* The Save section shows where you have your default folders saved.
* Quick Notes Section - this can be saved to your OneDrive folder
* Backup Folder - When you setup an automatic back up they are saved to this location. The default location for the WSU laptop image has this going to a hidden folder location c:\users\StarID\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote
* Default Notebook Location - If you create a notebook and don't change the location, it will be saved in this folder.
* Setup how often you want to automatically back up to occur.

Restore Your Notebooks
File > Options > Open Backups

Browse to the location that you backed up your Notebooks. If you are unsure where your backups are, look for the location in the Save & Backup menu displayed in section above.
