#How are you customizing your D2L courses? Brandy explains why she likes to customize each course home page here and it allows here to introduce herself and the class to her students.
#Could you talk more about widgets and the way you have customized your course home pages? In this segment Bandy describes how she uses RSS feeds, YouTube, and other types of custom widgets on her course home pages to drive students to relevant content that she requires them to use classes.
#Describe some of the outcomes your are seeing as a result of this custom home page? The sense of interaction among student, herself, and their connection to the wider World is an important outcome Bandy feels she gained from this enhancement of her D2L homepage. Student reflection essays also support the impact this innovation is having on the way they learn.
#What advice do you have for faculty considering customize their D2L course home pages? Brandy suggest that there should be no fear when to spend some time familiarizing yourself with these tools and trying to see what works best for you. She added that it was helpful to draw upon the TLT Services people to guide her towards tools she should try, based on her needs, and learn how to use them when she decides to adopt a specific tool.
Key Outcomes
* Make the content, resources, and other items on your D2L course home page vital to class assignments so that students are forced to access and read these materials regularly. This keeps them engaged with the content and connected to other students.
* Connection to the larger community with resources such as the New York Times allows Brandy to build a wider understanding of the content and provide a relevant connection to the curriculum of the class.
* Reflection essays, discussion boards, and class comments indicate that they are engaged and actively applying the content she is sharing on the custom D2L course home page.

Movie Maker Live is part of Windows Live Essentials.

Windows Live Movie Maker
(Taken from Wikipedia) Windows Live Movie Maker is intended to replace Windows Movie Maker that is currently included in Windows Vista. It is a complete rewrite of the Windows Movie Maker application, focusing on the needs of general users, the streamlined design consists largely in the reduction of features considered unimportant to general users.[2] The program includes a redesigned ribbon interface. Windows Live Movie Maker allows users to publish videos to Windows Live SkyDrive, Facebook, YouTube and Flickr, as well creating HD videos. However, it has received criticism over its removal of most of the features of the older versions, particularly the timeline.

There is no manual necessary when using Windows Live Movie Maker. The interface in intuitive and the tools are right where you want and need them to be - at your fingertips. Windows Live Movie Maker is the easy, fast way to turn photos and videos into great-looking movies and slideshows you can share—on the Web or on DVD.

Download Windows Live Movie Maker

Using Windows Live Movie Maker
(The Information below is taken from http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/wlmm.asp)

When you consider what it does, Windows Live Movie Maker is arguably as simple as it can be. The UI is logically split between a full-featured ribbon-type toolbar (which is much more impressive than the ribbon UIs in either Paint or WordPad in Windows 7), a video preview pane, and a content pane.

As you drag content into the application, it appears as clips in the content pane in a storyboard-style view. You can drag and drop clips to order them and can mix and match videos with photos. From here, you can proceed manually and discover some of the application's more advanced features, which we'll examine below.

Or you can simply click the AutoMovie button to quickly make a final, polished movie that includes a title, credits, and simple crossfade transitions between each clip. It can also optionally fit the length of the video to a song (or other audio track) of your choosing.

When the AutoMovie process is complete--it's surprisingly fast, even on large projects--you can edit the title and credits, which causes a new context-sensitive Text Tools tab group to appear in Movie Maker's ribbon. Editing each is as simple as can be expected, and most people will be up and running in no time.

If you are willing to dive a bit deeper into the Windows Live Movie Maker user interface, you'll be rewarded with a rich set of functionality. You can do things like add captions, which can be handy when you want to describe the location or subject of a particular photo or movie clip. Movie Maker's captions aren't static, however. They come complete with optional special panning effects, custom fonts, transparency settings, and even fine-tunable start and end times.

In addition to simple brightness control, Windows Live Movie Maker also sports 20 visual effects, and if you want you can easily use two or more on the same clip using a Multiple effects tool. Visual effects range from the expected grayscale filters to some horizontal and vertical mirror images.

Do you have the current version?
Start>Windows Movie Maker>Help>About: Check to make sure you have version 2 installed on your computer. If not, go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and Microsoft should automatically check for updates on your computer.

Installing Only Select Features
Necessary pre-editing information
* Our Digital Camera/Helpful Filming Techniques wiki page is full of information to teach you about some simple ways to optimize the filming of the raw videos, which will improve the overall quality of the final product, as well as add ease to the editing process.

FlipCam information
* The FlipCams have very basic functionality.
** The adjustable settings are: language, date, time, camera sounds (on/off), & recording light (on/off).
*** To change any of these settings, press and hold the "Record" button immediately after turning the camera on until the options appear.
** While recording: you can zoom in and out.
** While reviewing: you can play videos, change the volume, and delete clips from the camera.

* What the Flip lacks:
** Microphone port
** Manual focus
** Different modes (for filming at night, sporting events, etc.)
** Auto-steady (to help counteract shaky filming)

* Zoom
** Not all FlipCams have a zoom function, but most do. To zoom in and out, use the + and - buttons on the left and right sides of the record button while filming.
** Tips for when to use zoom

FlipShare program
* FlipShare Software Setup
** If the application is deleted from the camera, you can download it here; the Windows and Mac download links are about halfway down the page in the right column.

* Importing files onto your machine using FlipShare

Backup
* Once you've imported the raw video files onto your computer, BACK THEM UP. Keeping extra copies of your video files is good insurance against accidental deletion. If a file is deleted, you can just make a copy of the backup and begin working with it, instead of having to re-shoot your videos.
* Several options are available:
** Mac
*** Network storage
*** CD/DVD
*** External hard drive/flash drive
** PC
*** Network storage
*** CD/DVD
*** External hard drive/flash drive

Saving each step in editing
* During the editing process, it's a good idea to save the project with a new file name each time you edit, instead of just saving over past work. If a mistake is made or a file is corrupted/lost, you can revert to the last copy without losing all your work up to that point.
** Every time you open the project to edit it, select File>Save Project As and rename the file; that way you can save several times during each editing session, and you won't accidentally write over the older files.
** Some common ways people successively name their files include:
*** Numbering up: Example1.moviemaker, Example2.moviemaker, Example3.moviemaker, etc.
*** Dates edited: Example3-10-11.moviemaker, Example3-13-11.moviemaker, Example3-20-11.moviemaker, etc.

Movie Maker’s toolbars
*Menu Bar: This is where you can do anything from customizing your view to editing video clips. This bar consists of: File, Home, Animations, Visual Effects, Project, and View

*Standard Toolbar: Consists of shortcuts to options located under the Menu Bar. Saving your movie and undoing an editing move are the two most used shortcuts located here. Another option, under this toolbar, is a scroll box where you can access different video clips, transitions and effects. This is primarily used while in the editing stage of your movie making process.

*Movie Task Toolbar: Consists of basic shortcuts such as capturing, editing and exporting your video. Beginners should look here if they need help during any stage of the video editing process. Also located under this toolbar are help files that can assist you in any questions you may have.

About this article
This article demonstrates how to move and reorder modules and topics in a table of contents (TOC) in a Desire2Learn (D2L) course. It is intended for instructors.
What's the root?
D2L and this article use the term, root, when describing how modules and sub-modules can be moved in a TOC. Root refers to the top level of the TOC, above which there are no parent modules.
What's moving?
Moving refers to removing a module, sub-module, or topic from its current position in a TOC and placing it in another position. This can be done in one of two ways:
Drag-and-drop
D2L allows instructors to move modules, sub-modules, and topics by dragging and dropping them (watch the video demonstration)

Using the Actions menu
Instructors can also use the following functions on the Actions menu:
<div style="float: right; margin-left:.5cm;"></div>

*Move Up/Down - This function moves a topic or sub-module up/down one position in the content outline within its parent module. It also moves modules on the root up/down one position.
*Move To - This function allows an instructor to select a parent module to which to move a sub-module or topic.
*Send to root - This function moves a sub-module out of its parent module to the root.

Instructions for using the Actions menu
For all instructions below, first navigate to a D2L course and select Content from the Materials menu. This will take you to the D2L Content Tool. From the sidebar region, select a module.
Moving a module up or down
#Select the Actions arrow for the module to display the menu (Figure 1).
#Select Move Up or Move Down to move the module one position in the TOC.
#Repeat the process to continue to move the module more than one position.
Moving a module to another parent module
#Select the Actions arrow for the module to display the menu (Figure 1).
#Select Move To. This will bring up the Move To window.
#Select the parent module to which you want to move the current module.
#Select the Move button.
Moving a sub-module to the root
#Select the Actions arrow for the module to display the menu (Figure 1).
#Select Send to root. The module will be placed on the root, just above the current module.
Moving a topic up or down
#Select the Actions arrow for the topic to display the menu (Figure 2).
#Select Move Up or Move Down to move the topic one position in the TOC.
#Repeat the process to continue to move the topic more than one position.
Moving a topic to another parent module
#Select the Actions arrow for the topic to display the menu (Figure 2).
#Select Move To. This will bring up the Move To window.
#Select the parent module to which you want to move the current topic.
#Select the Move button.

Additional Information
*The move options displayed in the Actions menu are dependent on the current position of the module or topic. For example, if the topic is already in the first position, Move Up will not be listed as an option.
*Topics cannot have sub-topics. Topics also can't be on the root. They must always reside in a parent module.
*Take care when dragging and dropping modules to the root. It's easy to mistakenly make them sub-modules. If this happens, it may seem like the module disappeared. Just look inside other modules to find it and try again.

<noinclude>
About this article
This article includes a description of the Course Overview feature in the Desire2Learn (D2L) Content Tool. It is intended for instructors.
What's a course overview?
The course overview is a default feature of any D2L table of contents (TOC), along with Bookmarks and Upcoming Events (Figure 1). It has two, optional components: a description that an instructor can enter using the Editor Tool and an attachment that the instructor can upload. This material will be the first thing students see when they access the course content area. Students can also view this material at any time by selecting the Course Overview link on the TOC.
Is it required?
No, instructors are not required to include either a description or attachment in the Course Overview feature. If left empty, the heading, "Course Overview," will not be visible to students and they will instead be directed to the first item on the TOC. Instructors will always be directed to the Course Overview when they access the Content tool and they will see a blank content region if it's empty.

Why include it?
A course overview can help orient students by providing a starting point or homepage for the content area of a course. The course description and a few references to content structure (e.g., "Access videos by selecting the Videos link.") can help students navigate the rest of the TOC. Other potential applications include:
*Posting an interesting image and the name of the class. Think of it as a book cover.
*Content-related information from the syllabus (e.g., required texts).

Limitations
*Any file uploaded as an attachment to the Course Overview is not subject to the same tracking as normal topics in the TOC. Students will not get an indication that that they have accessed the file and instructors will not get any data regarding student access. If you want tracking, include the file as a topic in the TOC.
*Whatever is in the course overview will be displayed each time students accesses the TOC, which they do frequently. It is not a good location for lengthy documents (e.g., syllabi) or static movie content (e.g., a welcome video) that will play over and over again. It's also not well suited for dynamic content (e.g., updates, announcements, reminders). D2L offers other tools that handle those communication tasks more effectively.

Adding/editing a course overview
For all instructions below, first navigate to a D2L course and select Content from the Materials menu. This will take you to the Content Tool.
Adding/editing a description
#Select the Course Overview link from the left navigation bar.
#Select the Add a description... link (Figure 2). If editing an existing description, just select the description.
#Use the editor to create/edit the description (Figure 3).
#Select the Update button to save.

Adding/updating an attachment
#Select the Course Overview link from the left navigation bar.
#Do one of the following: drag and drop the file into the designated area (the drop area will turn green when the file can be dropped; Figure 4) or select the Actions arrow, select Add an attachment (Figure 5), select Upload, find the file to upload, double-click the file or single-click and select Open, and select the Done button.
#To update an attachment, repeat Step 2. Add an attachment... will have changed to Change the attachment....

Deleting a description or attachment
#To delete a description, open the existing description in the editor by selecting it, delete everything in the editor, and select the Update button.
#To delete an attachment, select the Action arrow and select Remove attachment.

About this article
This article demonstrates how to add a content module to a table of contents (TOC) in a Desire2Learn (D2L) course. It is intended for instructors.
What's a module?
In D2L, instructors provide students with access to course materials by building a TOC composed of headings and links. The headings are called modules and the links are called topics. There are many ways to organize content and any TOC could include a combination of approaches. For example, instructors could organize content by:
*Timeline. Modules represent some unit of time (e.g., Week 1, Week 2).
*Subject. Modules represent chapters or subject areas in textbook fashion (e.g., Biological Bases of Behavior)
*Type. Modules group content based on type (e.g., handouts, slides, videos, links).

Instructions
For all instructions below, first navigate to a D2L course and select Content from the Materials menu. This will take you to the D2L Content Tool.

Adding a module
#At the bottom of the sidebar region, select Add a module... (Figure 1).
#Enter a title for the new module and press Enter on your keyboard.

Adding a sub-module
#From the sidebar region, select the module or sub-module under which you want to place a sub-module.
#In the content region, select Add a sub-module... (Figure 2).
#Enter a title for the new sub-module, and press Enter on your keyboard.

Switching between published and draft mode
#From the sidebar region, select the module or sub-module that you want to switch.
#Select either Published or Draft (this will differ depending on the current mode) from the content region (Figure 3). This will close the list and switch to that mode.

Renaming a module or sub-module
#From the sidebar region, select the module or sub-module that you want to rename.
#Select the title of the module or sub-module at the top of the content region (Figure 4).
#Change the title and select Enter on your keyboard to save it.

Adding a description to a module or sub-module
#From the sidebar region, select the module or sub-module that you want to rename.
#Select Add a description... on the content region (Figure 5).
#Use the editor to create the description and select the Update button to save it.

Additional details
*New modules and sub-modules are always appended to the end of the list. They can then be moved if needed.
*It's good practice to keep module and sub-module titles short so they fit on the sidebar. Titles longer than 16 characters (including spaces) will wrap to a second line.
*By default, new modules are set to published mode and access is unrestricted. You can control access by switching to Draft mode or by setting restrictions at the module-level (e.g., if you don't want students to see a module until after a certain point in the course). This will restrict access to all of the sub-modules and topics underneath it.
*Module and sub-module descriptions can help orient students and give your TOC a polished look.
*If you plan to import a publisher-provided course pack or cartridge, it is not uncommon for that process to result in the addition of several new modules and sub-modules. For example, the publisher may include links to PowerPoint slides under a "PowerPoint Presentations" module. This import can be done at any time, even if you have already added modules yourself. Any new modules created by the installation of a course pack are typically added at the bottom of your existing TOC. These modules can then be edited, moved, or deleted.
*If you are going to merge course sections, do not create modules until after the merge is complete and the new merged course appears on your class list.
*Be careful when deleting modules and sub-modules. Depending on how you delete the module, you may also delete child sub-modules and topics.
About this article
This article includes a summary of the features and functions of the Desire2Learn (D2L) Content Tool and links to articles with more detailed information. It is intended for instructors. </noinclude>

Accessing the Content Tool
Instructors can access the D2L Content Tool in one of two ways. From the course home page:
#Select the Content link from the Materials dropdown menu (Figure 1), or
#Select the Edit Course link (Figure 2) to go to the Course Administration page and select Content under the Site Resources heading.

The table of contents format
D2L presents course content in a table of contents (TOC) format. Students see a tiered list of modules and topics (Figure 2). Modules are simply headings used to organize the topics. Topics can link to a variety of files and activities, including:
*Documents that the instructor has uploaded to the course (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF)
*Publisher-provided material
*Movies, images, and other multimedia elements
*External websites
*Content pages that the instructor has created directly in D2L using the Editor Tool
*Other D2L activities (e.g., quizzes, dropbox folders, discussion forums) within the same course

Building a table of contents
Most instructors build their course TOC manually. D2L also offers tools (e.g., Course Design Accelerator, Course Builder) that help guide TOC construction. One method does not preclude the other. Once instructors have a TOC built for a course, it can be copied from one semester's course to another. Note that importing content from a publisher often results in modules and topics being added to the TOC. Select the links below to review articles with more detailed information about using the Content Tool:

Copyright responsibilities
Instructors are responsible for following copyright law when building D2L courses. This is particularly important when creating digital copies of copyrighted material and uploading them to D2L. For example, instructors might scan an image or part of a book chapter and then upload that file to D2L. Are they breaking copyright law or is it considered fair use? If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to consult your Library Liaison or a [mailto:tlt@winona.edu TLT staff member]. Note the following:
*If you are ever in doubt, ask for permission. Owners are happy to explain any conditions they have placed on their copyrighted content and would much rather talk with you before you upload a copy of their property than sue you for violating copyright.
*If you are simply linking to material that is hosted elsewhere (e.g., a YouTube movie), you are not making a copy of the material. Always check to see whether the material is already available online before making a copy.
*There is widespread confusion among instructors about the doctrine of fair use. It does not allow teachers to post a digital copy of any copyrighted material online as long as it is being used for educational purposes. It also does not free instructors from responsibility if digital copies are posted to a secure online system like D2L. There are four criteria that are applied in any fair use case:
**The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
**The nature of the copyrighted work
**The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
**The effect of the use upon the potential market for, or value of, the copyrighted work
It is easier to argue fair use if the copy was made strictly for educational purposes and is being used in a way for which it was not intended, the work was not a song, poem, movie or other creative performance, only a portion of the work was copied, and the copy in no way affected the value of the original work. Again, if you are questioning whether to make a copy, get help.

Disabled features and functions
The following Content Tool functions are currently disabled in the WSU instance of D2L. Want them enabled? [mailto:tlt@winona.edu Contact TLT].
*Content Feedback: D2L allows students to rate each content topic in a course using a five-point "star" scale. They can also attach open-ended comments to their ratings. The feedback can be either anonymous or identifiable. Instructors can review this feedback via a report.<noinclude>
Overview
This article describes how students use technology in Dr. Kimberly Bates' BIOL 445 - Immunology course and includes links to corresponding instructions. It is primarily intended for students who are currently enrolled in the course.

Concept Mapping Project
In this course, students work in groups to produce a large concept map using a tool called Inspiration. Students will need to install Inspiration, learn how to use it, create their concept map, and present it to the rest of the class.

Getting Started With Inspiration
Step 1: Install Inspiration
* Follow the instructions provided for Installing Inspiration
* Note: Inspiration is under key server control. When installing and using Inspiration, students must be either on campus or connected via [VPN].

Step 2: Learn the basics
*Learning How to Use Inspiration
*Inspiration 9.0 Video Tutorials

Step 3: Create your concept map
*Coming soon

Group Meetings
Students will be using a web conferencing tool called Adobe Connect to share their concept maps.Dr. Bates will set up an Adobe Connect virtual meeting room for the group projects. Adobe Connect is a virtual conferencing tool which will allow meeting participants and presenters screen share, chat, video and audio conference, use interactive whiteboards as well as other features. Using Adobe Connect you will be able to meet with your group to work on your project without having to email the document back and forth to your group members. Dr. Bates will share with you the URL for the meeting one was it has been created. It is recommended to use earbuds or a headset when meeting in the Connect room. To prepare for using Adobe Connect, please review the following information:

* Learn about Adobe Connect: This wiki page has been created for WSU students and serves as a checklist of features you will use in an Adobe Connect room.

*You Tube Tutorial : This 9 minute video tutorial is for hosts, presenters, and participants. The first 1:20 of the video is geared for hosts, so if you are participating in the Connect room you can move past that segment of the tutorial.

*Click Here to install the add-in and prepare your computer prior to your first Adobe Connect Meeting.

Tips
To allow others in your group to view your screen (or your Inspiration document) follow one of the two options:

*Option A: From the Share pod: Select Share > My Computer Screen > Desktop
*Option B: From the Share pod: Select Share > My Computer Screen > Applications This option only works if open the Inspiration document prior to starting the screen sharing process.

Project Presentation
A new feature of Inspriation 9.0 is exporting to a presentation or taking a snapshot for a presentation. These features allow you to capture specific segments of your mind map and organize the segments for a presentation.
